The Shakeout

Posted on Wednesday 24 June 2009

Today’s economy is a challenge for all businesses. We are seeing weaknesses in business sectors that haven’t been experienced to this degree in decades. For many businesses, this will be a challenge and for some this may mean the end. The steel building industry is no different.

In the run up of the boom years, there were a number of companies entering into the business of selling pre-engineered steel buildings. Most of these companies were internet based due to the low cost and low barrier to set up shop. As the consumer (mostly through the extensive national radio and television advertising by General Steel)  became aware of the cost and time benefits of building with pre-engineered steel buildings, the % share of construction in the 3 story and less category moved dramatically toward pre-engineered steel. This created a fertile environment for the new startup companies which needed little financial resources to conduct business.

This has changed. Steel building companies have been going out of business with the turn of the economy and with them go the deposits of many customers waiting for delivery of their building. People who thought they were saving a little extra on their building package now find they have lost thousands of dollars.

I have only two words; be careful! Your building is a big investment, perhaps one of the biggest you will make. The impact on your business or organization can be substantial. Does it really make sense to make your decision on a building package based upon a few hundred dollars in savings? Let’s see; even if you save as much as $5,000 on the building package and you spread that over the 50 year warranty period on the building, you have saved $8.34 per month. That’s a Latte at your favorite coffee shop. It better be a good one if you are going to overlook years of service that you may need or the reliability of the company from which you make your purchase. The first year of your construction project will require knowledgeable service, advice and perhaps some assistance with pre-construction planning. The next 49 years will likely require some additions; and what about replacements or warranty?

For a product this important does it really pay to go with an unknown supplier? I’d call The General. Call 800-745-2685 today.
