Price or Value?

Posted on Monday 15 June 2009

Most people when faced with purchasing a big ticket item feel the need to shop for the lowest price. However, for important purchases of non-standard items, it’s critical to remember that value is more than the purchase price alone.

For example, if you were making a decision about which physician would perform major surgery on you or treat you for a major illness, would you make this decision based upon the cost of the surgery?  Most likely, you would decide based upon the reputation of the physician and the experience of his or her staff. You would want to determine the likelihood of success by looking at their capability to deliver good care and you would want a comfort level by knowing this is a group to whom you would want to entrust one of the most important decisions of your life.

Many people who are purchasing a building for their business or organization are facing one of the biggest financial decisions they will make; A decision that will impact their business, church or school for many years. To make things more challenging, this is often the first project of this type and scope in which the purchaser will be involved.

When making a purchase like a steel building, you are really creating a relationship with the company that may continue for years. Choose a company in which you are comfortable you will receive the service and expertise that will lead to the successful completion of your project. Please consider the skill and experience of the staff as well as the financial strength of the company.

A word of caution: In recent years, there has been a proliferation of steel building companies pop up on the internet. Since the investment required in establishing an internet based business is nothing more than an attractive website, these companies often have little financial backing. Unfortunately, in this economy, some of these companies may only be a deposit away from closing their doors. Before you make that deposit, please consider:

  • How well are they financed?
  • Will they be able to provide the service and expertise you will need?
  • If they are required to back up a claim, will they be out of business?
  • What happens to your deposit if they fold?
  • A 50-year warranty is only good if the company will be there in 50 years.
