In This Economy

Posted on Wednesday 10 June 2009

It’s often said that the internet is the great equalizer. Whether a company is an industry leader or a new startup in somebody’s basement, if the business website looks good enough, the consumer just can’t tell. However, perception is not reality and in this economy, the consumer must beware.

For most people, a building is one of the biggest financial investments they are likely to make. Since a pre-engineered steel building will not go to fabrication until a deposit is made, it’s critical to know with whom you are dealing before you make that deposit. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of steel building companies pop up on the internet. Ask yourself the following:

  • Do you really know this company?

  • Is it a new startup by a couple of salespeople who left their employer to go off on their own or is it a company that will be there when you need service?

  • How well are they financed?

  • Will one claim on a project wipe them out, and your deposit with it?

  • Are they one deposit away from closing the doors?

When you are making a major purchase like a steel building, you are really creating a relationship that may continue for years with the company you select. Ask yourself; is this the company that I want to work with very closely for the next year during the fabrication of my building and the construction of my project? Will they be able to provide the service and advice over the next several years? What about warranty issues? A 50-year warranty is only good if the company will be there in 50 years.

While price is important, most business owners know that price really means value. What is the value when you consider the service provided and the company’s ability to stand behind their product? If your decision is based entirely upon the price of the building package, what did you really save when you spread it over the next 25-50 years? These are critical value decisions that are more important than ever in today’s economy.
