Expansion of steel building construction began during World War II when steel buildings, called Quonset Huts were manufactured for military use as aircraft hangars, machine shops, and barracks. These very distinct structures were long buildings with a curved roof. (From the front they resemble a grass “hut.”) These were particularly popular with the military because they could be mass produced at such a low cost. These buildings were also used in the agricultural industry. These buildings required only the aid of limited labor force and hand tools to construct and, if necessary, could at a future date simply be taken apart, shipped away, and reassembled at another site. Such portability made them ideal for the mobile military.
