A Brief History (continued from Friday … )

Posted on Saturday 5 May 2007

At the dawn of the 20th century the use of steel was mainly used in the construction of garages. At this time the auto industry was just emerging and therefore the demand for sturdy garages was high. Initially, these garages were comprised out of a combination of a wood and metal design. However, as the demand for more durable and fire resistant structures increased, garages were soon made entirely out of steel. As a result, these new steel garages were safer in that they offered better protection against fire dangers. In addition, they were also less expensive to make. Furthermore, these structures required less labor to erect—which saved auto manufactures and others in the automobile industry lots of money in avoided labor costs. These benefits gave the market what people were demanding. With each satisfied customer, the demand for steel buildings increased even more.
